How often should I floss?

Are you keeping up with your dental hygiene? Are you consistently taking the steps necessary to ensure that you are prolonging the life of your teeth? Many people are more conscious about taking care of their bodies these days. There are so many people becoming vegan, and gluten free, and also trying to get to the gym as much as possible. While this is great, the majority of adults, the older they get, let their dental care fall by the wayside. This is just a normal thing to do, as there have been inventions such as gum and breath mints that can hide an awful-smelling mouth. However, it is crucial to use the tools you have at home to remove plaque that has been built up in your teeth.

Plaque is formed by the food and drinks you are consuming, and if you are eating foods with a lot of sugar, and drinking things like pop or coffee, chances are there is a lot of plaque on your teeth. While many people say they are avidly attending to their dental care, the truth is that they simply are not and it is going to show down the road.

Why should you care about dental care?

Quite frankly, the first reason you should be concerned with your dental care is bad breath. This is an obvious reason, but one that people often overlook. We’ve all had to talk to someone with bad breath, and when you are talking to them, you just want to leave the conversation. Imagine this happening to you, but you are the one with bad breath! It is an awful feeling and we’ve all been there. This can all be avoided by taking the necessary steps to take care of your teeth, using dental floss and also brushing your teeth.

Taking care of your dental hygiene is important because you want to prolong the life of your teeth. If you do not brush or floss your teeth, your teeth are slowly going to rot away due to food decaying around the area of the tooth. This is also causes the gums to become looser, and when you are older, your teeth are going to start falling out.

The nerves in your teeth are very sensitive and can hurt a lot if you are not taking care of your teeth. If you have a sore tooth, you lose the ability to drink cold drinks or eat any foods that require a lot of bite. This is going to hurt a lot, and require dental intervention to correct the problem. In order to fix your teeth at any point, it is going to cost a lot of money, especially if you do not have any dental coverage. This is why you need to care about your dental care and take the steps necessary to keep your teeth in the best of shape.

How to brush your teeth

The first thing we are going to be covering is how to effectively brush your teeth. We are taught from a young age how important it is to brush your teeth twice a day. It is crucial to remove plaque from the outer layer of the teeth, and brush with a good toothpaste. So how do you brush your teeth? Well first off, grab your toothbrush and place a small amount of toothpaste on the bristles. Many people put way too much, which is a waste of toothpaste—you really do not need that much! Next, place it under warm water for a few seconds, to wet the toothbrush, and then, place it in your mouth. What you can do now is brush your teeth in a circular motion rather than side to side.

Many people think that side to side is just as good as up and down or around and around, but this is not the best way to do it. A circular motion is much more effective in getting the plaque off the teeth. Do not forget to brush the back areas of the teeth, as this is where a lot of food can accumulate. Brush for at least 2 minutes, and then rinse your mouth. You have to do this twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. It is also reasonable to brush after having a smelly meal such as fish, or something with a lot of garlic!

Dental floss

While we all usually know how important brushing our teeth is, many people often overlook flossing their teeth. This is also something that must be done every day. Not only is it as important as brushing your teeth, there are aspects of flossing that are even more important! When eating, food gets caught between your teeth; these are areas that a toothbrush cannot reach. Therefore, it is crucial that you use floss to get that stuck food out.

How to floss

So how often should you floss? We recommend that you floss before or after you brush your teeth, so twice a day. This ensures that you are getting all the plaque and food out of the mouth in the morning and at night. One of the best ways to floss is with a water flosser. This is a method where you use an oral irrigator that uses water pressure to floss between the teeth. It is much more effective than using the traditional string floss.
